We call this the empty set and denote it by the symbol ø.
If A is countably infinite, we will extend the notation to write A = { x1, x2, x3,… }.
More generally, we will use the notation
A = { x; ø(x) }
where ø(x) denotes a statement by which the elements of A are characterized. In words (1) reads, ‘A is the set of all those elements x for which the statement ø(x) is true’.
