Marina Abramovic

“For me it was always a question… If we have such a fast life, we have to have long art… I always believe the artist’s function is to connect disconnected society and give some kind of awareness, not just spiritual but where they live…”

“Its so important in life of the artists to know a few things: to know when to stop the work and how to die.”

Marina Abramović’s
‘The Artist is Present’ is a performance retrospective at MoMA, New York, from March 14-May 31, 2010

most beautiful seatbelt ad ever.

April 20th, 2010 by Farah

I love how the interlocking of the two family members’ fingers not only successfully communicates the key message of the importance of a seatbelt, but it serves as a reminder that anyone who ever gets involved in such tragedies, hurts not only themselves, but those they share a close bond with. I’m starting to sound like I work with the traffic police, I’m sorry!

I also love how the pre-accident bit is in slow motion, coupled with soothing music that may be representative of how we take life for granted, and then followed by the sudden thrust of a driver, a father, a husband, a best friend, a bread winner, a son.

The ad is further dramatised with the flying of the coins/bits/pieces, representative of a car crash, perhaps also to display how brittle life can be, and that it can all break apart into the tiniest little pieces, fly away and disappear in an instance.

Employing the soft approach, lovely to see that all this was done without the conventional employment of blood, dead bodies, mourning family members, screaming eyewitnesses, crashed cars, ambulances and the likes.

Definitely a work of art this ad is.

When Freeways Meet

No matter how far off in this world these neverending freeways spring out, there will come a point in time when meant-to-happen connects the dots for us.

And that is when Freeways meet, greet and dance with happy feets. :)

A Day In The Death of Donny B.

April 15th, 2010 by Low

Cinéma vérité style. 1969

Mostly considered an anti-drug film, it was made for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The film follows its protagonist, Donny B, a young black man who appears to be a heroin addict, as he makes his way through the cruel ghettos of New York City… Through the run time of 14 minutes, a blues-like tune plays over the footage and voice-overs, with vocals that come in and out during the film, narrating Donny B as he does wrong.

And if you ever get a chance, watch this classic movie with Paul Newman as Fast Eddie. I was up super late at night flipping through channels on my television when I stumbled upon this old movie. At first it seems to be a simple story about a pool shark, but under the laid back vibe lays a character study of what it means to be a winner and a loser. At one point in the film, all the characters can do is lie to each other. At another point Paul Newman is ridiculed down to the lowest. I figure to all our readers this flick might be an elusive one to get because it might not widely be known outside of the United States. But if you can get your hands on it, give it a watch. Be careful though, it’s pacing is on the old skool tip, so it might not be Michael Bay – approved.

West is the Best

February 27th, 2010 by Low

The evening falls onto the West

The silent breeze speaks quietly

Onto to the hollow beat of the breast.

The solid titanium quadrant of your brain

escapes the beginning of the end

And silently says you should refrain.

You are the best. She is the worse.

Forever burn unto to the toast

blackened ripe with solitary hope.

Draining, she has in store

For excessive possession of one’s dope

Collapse unto your shoulder floor.

BLOK + 441 Mag VIDEO SHOOT

February 26th, 2010 by Low

441 Magazine is a new publication I started with Mariel and Paul Marin (they’re cousins) and tonight we just wrapped up our first video shoot with the band BLOK. Here’s a photo of BLOK. I’m hoping awesome things are going to be in the works with 441. It already seems to be blowing up and we haven’t even produced the first issue yet! This would actually turn me off because of all the hype happening before actually producing anything, but in this case it seems to me that I’ll fine. Either that or I just don’t care about the ‘pressures’ anymore. Be free. Be alive. Do what you want. Rock on Garth. Rock on Wayne. BLING!
